about

This is a selection of what I think are some of the strongest tracks I've recorded over the last number of years. I also wanted this Sampler itself to make some musical sense as a six song EP. From Ernest Pop, recorded in 2008, I selected "Every Day." On it, I am playing my Nords as well as guitar and voice. For ZeJoice, recorded in 2009, I selected "An Encounter." Ben Jaffe is playing tenor and Marc Greene is on bass. I selected "If I Could Write a Truth" from Missa Angnostica recorded in 2010 but completed in early 2011. Tom Jameson is on guitar, Marc Greene is on bass and Ben Jaffe is featured on tenor. I played Nord keyboards, banjo, harmonica, percussion, and recorders. It was hard to pick just one track from Other English, however, I decided to go with the title track. My daughter was not yet three when I recorded her singing, playing a toy recorder and toy xylophone all at once. She seemed to process everything I do as a person and embody it with such authenticity. On this track Ben is playing tenor. Len Heisler is on electric bass, and I am playing keyboards and theramin. Jessamyn was recorded some time in early 2011, the rest of us recorded in the summer of 2011. I finished the recording engineering of the album in January of 2012. The Free Age is the culmination of a 20 year musical partnership with Ben Jaffe. We started improvising in this specific manner in the summer of 2011. We recorded about 90 minutes of music of which I selected roughly 45 minutes for the album on this website. I believe "Standardized Test" is one of the very strongest examples of our form of Jazz. It refers, in this case, more directly in name and in composition to the "standard." And yet, it is not a standard at all. It might just be a good example of our made-up word "Jazzabooby." We were 17...Melodica and Guitar #1 was recorded in 2012. It was the fist thing Tom and I recorded for this album, and it remains the most pleasing to me. It has a sort of "noisy-silent-intense-quietness..."Next on this sampler is a work from an as yet, unfinished album with the working title, Through Time. I have recorded 7 tracks for this album, and would like to finish it this summer. It is the first album of music since Ernest Pop (2008) in which I intend to play all of the instruments. On the track "If I Liked You," I am playing keyboards, various percussion instruments, recorder, shenhai, tin whistle and my father's clarinet. Next on this Sampler is American Improvisation recorded 12-28-13. It is part of the last release by me and Ben Jaffe. On it I am playing my Nords and Ben is playing Tenor, with a little voice. Last, is the track, Be My Wife, from my album of songs by David Bowie. This was recorded in March of 2017. There is just piano and voice recorded live. If you really enjoy one of these tracks I encourage you to give a listen to the full albums on this website. A download of a full album is just 5$ and I believe the fidelity of the recordings is superior to mp3's purchased on iTunes.
