about

My first strong memory of loving David Bowie comes from when I was about 10. I was in music camp, and was experiencing my first crush, a violinist named Victoria. My older brother played Bowie songs in his room all the time. I was playing ping pong, and I couldn't get the song "Oh You Pretty Thing" out of my head. I kept singing it as I played, and thought of Victoria. I can mark major moments of my life to Bowie album releases and various songs I've shared with the loves of my life, my friends, and my family.

When Bowie died, I was pretty seriously depressed for weeks. I had just been on such an emotional high because, Blackstar, released days before his death, was the record I'd been waiting for my whole life. Yes, I've been very fond of a lot of his later work; from Tin Machine, Outside, to Heathen. But, as great as many of the later songs and albums are, none could match what I hoped for, another masterpiece like Station to Station, Low, Aladdin Sane, etc...In my opinion, Blackstar is such a record. I was overjoyed listening to it. The night he died, before I fell asleep, I watched the Lazarus video. It left me depressed, and I had a nightmare about being in the hospital with him.

This album is a very personal reflection on my adoration for David Bowie. Its construction is rather simple. I practiced this list of 10 songs for months in my classroom where I work. A wonderful former student of mine gave me a keyboard for my room. My intention was to record these 10 songs in order live, and with no overdubs. And, that's what I did. I recorded each song, and allowed myself one take only. In that way this is the closest thing I've recorded to a live concert...With each song, I imagined a person I was singing to. People who mean a lot to me. The first song, "I Can't Give Everything Away" however, I sang to David Bowie.

I hope you enjoy this reflection on Bowie's music. I made it mainly for me, but I think you might like it too.
