about

The Free Age came about somewhat organically. Ben and I have been playing together since high school. Every now and again, in our improvisations, we'd find a simple place in the music and just stay there. After finishing just such an improv, Ben said, "why don't we try to do that one part again as its own piece?" Over the next year or so we consciously tried to work within that loose framework. The style lent itself to the use of some other instruments such as Kalimba, Theremin and Shenhai. This reflects a sort of synthesis between the electric and the traditional. I think that The Free Age is a Minimalist inspired series of improvisations which evoke world landscapes and sound-scapes.

Abe Maneri has studied music directly and indirectly his whole life; starting out on violin at the age of 4, cello at age 9, piano, recorders, guitar, voice, percussion, and clarinet there after. He has performed with many noted musicians including Joe and Mat Maneri, Jessica Jones, Sabir Mateen, Assif Tsahar and John Medeski. In addition to playing music, Abe is a published author, as well as recorded poet.

Ben Jaffe was a founding member of Skavoovie and the Epitomes, performed with many bands in the Boston area including Murphy's Law, toured and recorded with Eli Reed and the True Loves, and is now working on many R&B projects in Bushwick and Williamsburg.

Reviews:

".... If I had not been sitting down, Maneri's performance would have knocked me on my can... he did not just play the piano, he transformed the instrument with energy and clashing sonorities."

--Stu Vandermark, Boston Jazz Scene

"Maneri fills the mind with words and thoughts that require—no encourage—repeated plays to get all of his metaphors. The music scores the poetry nicely; as practiced, the verse is delivered as if in song form."

--Mark Corroto, All About Jazz Magazine

...heavy and poignant, a dour Maneri is wry and sarcastic (his) free instrumental improvisation reflects the tension and anxiety as you would expect.

--Michael Nastos, Rovi
